Who's Gay?
OMG I GOT THE JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just got my dream job at my university as LGBT Coordinator! Seriously, I am trying not to cry and laugh and scream all at the same time but it's really hard. I've been waiting to hear about this job for like three weeks and I GOT IT!!!

Oh yeah! And I leave for the airport in the morning (Wed morning) to start my long vacation. I'll have internet access the whole time and all that, but my responses will be delayed so don't think I'm suddenly ignoring you if you comment on my LJ haha Love you all!!

And thank you so much for all the wonderful comments to this post. You all are seriously the best. :) <3

I know I can't read all of these!

  • Aug. 18th, 2008 at 5:02 PM
Belle
How can I? I've seriously just been reserving books I'm finding on vampire book lists or romance book lists (theme: vampire) and I pick them up and add them to the pile. It's become ridiculous. I've brought them all with me home (except for "Sunshine" which I had to return - but by God I will get it again and read it! haha) and now I'm going to lay them out and catalog them. They're not all vampire, but they're pretty much all paranormal fiction. It's basically a list for my vacation and an updated version of what I have over HERE!.

Jeaniene interview

Fanpire
Hey ya'll! :)

So you know how big of a fan I am of Jeaniene Frost, right? Well, the other day, she was having a contest on her Livejournal and the first 10 people to comment would win cover flats of "At Grave's End" and guess what?! I was one of those people!!! :) :) I'm so excited I can't even stand myself.

Today "Bitten By Books" has posted a new interview with her, which is lovely. Check her out cuz she's awwwwwesome: http://bittenbybooks.com/?p=997

I really want some icons to represent her books, but there really isn't much in the way of fanart/fananything for this series (aside from the message board). *pout*

Ellen + Portia

Ellen
Just wanted to post a quick comment about Ellen Degeneres and Portia de Rossi who got married last night! I imagine pictures (and perhaps a little video) will appear on the internet (and her show) this week. A few "unofficial" pics have made their way to the internet, but I'm excited to see any released photos. I've only read a little about the ceremony (which was extremely small) - nothin' about the reception or whether or not Justin Timberlake actually wrote and performed a song for them.

They are just lovely. Yay for happy couples!!! :)

Photobucket

They look beautiful in their wedding attire! *sigh* I'm so happy for them! :)

Where would you like to live?: Italy, Las Vegas, NYC
Your favorite color and flower?: blues (all shades!) and lilies... and yellow roses.
Your favorite prose authors?: Wilde is one. If we're talking favorite authors writing fiction (but perhaps not prose in the old school sense haha), I would say Jeaniene Frost is kind of rockin' my world these days. Umm... Rachel Mead is high up there. There are others, but I'm blanking haha
Your favorite poets?: Anne Sexton, Andrea Gibson, Ani Difranco, Alix Olson...

What characters in history do you most dislike?: ummm... ppl who have killed ppl b/c of who they are. Really anyone with absolute power - because absolute power corrupts.

How you want to die?: peacefully OR in a blaze of glory fighting for what I believe in.
What is your present state of mind?: Elated that I'm going to have a month of no school, but terrified that after that month I start grad school. And thinking about grad school makes me want to cry in ways I don't even understand yet.
For what fault have you most toleration?: what do I tolerate most in the faults of others? inconsideration, probably. I'm pretty good about lettings roll off my back. Your favorite motto: I have a few but one is "Everyone gets a happy ending, if you're not happy, it's not the end" and another is "I hope to one day live in a world where a chicken can cross the road without having its motives questioned."

RL update

Avenue Q college
They don't happen often, so I'll try to keep it short 'n' sweet so we can get back to the fandom postings haha

I'm a couple hours away from finishing my Capstone paper (so why don't I just finish it instead of posting? I have no idea.) which will be turned into my adviser who basically decides whether or not I graduate this quarter. Decides whether or not I go to grad school in the fall. I've told her she holds all the cards. Luckily she likes me. This also means that I have finished my math class and I got a B! hurray! My degree audit report is frustrating and concerning b/c it's telling me I need another class in one of the gen ed sections, but it's a lie. So I need someone to fix that before I have a heart attack. For serious.

Meeting with my adviser (my capstone adviser) was really just what I needed. She is so nice and encouraging and supportive - I don't know what I'd do without her guiding me. I shared with her my concerns about starting grad school and about having a "research interest." I told her, as I have told few others, that my real interest is fandom. I had originally wanted to do that for my capstone but my major adviser sort of shut me down. I told her about my ideas in discussing gender and sexuality as it relates to vampire fiction as well as fandom communities and a few other more specific things and she was nodding and giving me great advice. I told her that I received a lot of criticism from friends and professors when it came to my passion for fandoms and that I was nervous about delving into this field for my graduate work, not sure how to defend it, and she just brushed it off saying "You shouldn't have to defend your choice in research interest. You're interested in it. You want to research it. Do it."

So I am.

Of course I just have to create some sort of focus. But I think I'm going to do graduate work in fandom - all the while trying to tie in sexuality somehow (b/c that really is my deep-down focus). So we'll see. It's going to be an interesting two years.

I leave on Saturday to go back home ([info]onsparrowwings this means we need to get together in those few days or the few days after my vacation! haha) and then on Wednesday, I head to Arizona. That following Monday, it's off to Nevada until I return home Sept 9. Then I'm back in my college town the 13 or 14th of Sept, then I have grad school orientation. Not that any of you care what my schedule is, but I thought I'd share. I'm excited about traveling - I love to travel. I have books stacked up ready to be packed and some movies as well. "Enchanted" is going with me b/c I don't think my Grandmother's seen it and the Buffy musical because my mom loves it and wants to see it again. yay! So if I'm not around much for the next three weeks, you know why. I should be able to check my email daily, I just won't be on all day like I am when I'm not on vacation - and that makes me a little sad on the inside.

Wish me luck hitting some sort of jackpot in Vegas! haha I have student loans to pay off and books to stock my shelves with *grin*

And now... back to your regularly scheduled programing. If you haven't seen this yet, you MUST! It had me rolling on the ground:

Vampires or werewolves?

View other answers

Vampire! Hands down.

I've not read much in the way of werewolf fiction (although people tell me they're excellent) but I cannot get over my fascination with vampires. The myths that are tied into vampires - whether they're from the days of Dracula or from Twilight - always draw me in. There's something about living forever (and beautifully) that touches some part of my psyche that I can't let go of. The sexuality/sensuality of the vampires in fiction also draw me in - I don't really know how to explain it.

I blame my love of vampires on Joss Whedon (naturally), but I can't deny that Stephenie Meyer and Jeaniene Frost have been instrumental in my never-ending list of books I now want to read.

Meme of me... me.

Snagged from [info]halcyon - it's early, I'm bored, and I really just don't have the drive to do anything productive... so I'll do a survey! :) Oh and I want to use new icons :) :)

Upgrade!

Ash/Rach
I've officially upgraded to a paid account! Go me! This means tons of shiny new icons when I post my multitude of entries and comments - woohoo!

Speaking of icons... I'm a really bad icon-collector and have only recently started keeping track when I save the files (thanks to the brilliant user) so if you notice I'm using your icon, please let me know and I'll throw your LJ name on to credit :)

I also have a perrrrrrty new layout - I've wanted this Las Vegas lay-out since I joined LJ but it was a paid thing. But now it's mine!!! One day I'm going to put together something fancy and original, but I <3 Vegas so this works!

If ya'll have paid accounts and want to point out fun things I shouldn't miss, let me know! haha

Oh - and I finished books 2 & 3 of the "house of night" series. I'll post something probably at work tomorrow about 'em. (hint: they're amazing!! lol) Oh! And I finally bought the Night Huntress books - now they're in my collection and I can have them forever!!! Do you like all the exclamation points I'm using in this entry? I'm exhausted, my body hurts from sleeping on the ground (went camping), and I'm hungry - but yay for paid account!!! haha

Ashley/Rachel = my newest "'ship"

  • Aug. 8th, 2008 at 2:56 PM
Willow Tara
Shut up, I know they're real people. I just can't get behind Alice/Victoria b/c that's just weird lmao

I know I've been posting non-stop today, but I'm really bored at work and my flist just keeps setting me up for posting! haha

So Ashley Green and Rachel Lefevre attended the 4th annual Hollyshorts Film Festival... and they are simply stunning. I love that they're like bffs now. Picture from ifelthope.net and under the cut...

Don't worry, I'm not going to talk about the pitter patter of my heart... )

*sigh* And the "men of Twilight" (aka Edward, Jacob, Jasper, Emmett, Cam) have done a photo shoot for VMan Magazine and it'll go on sale Oct 21. I'm pullin' for a "Women of Twilight" shoot - preferably from a reputable magazine like Vanity Fair over TeenPop or whatever. I'll be lookin' for that photo shoot - and will be pissed if it doesn't happen. But for now, we shall enjoy Ashley/Rachelle-ness :)

Vampire Academy book 1

  • Aug. 8th, 2008 at 10:43 AM
Alice/Jasper
I just finished "Vampire Academy" book 1 by Richelle Mead and I loved it! First off, I just have to say that my biggest gripe right now is that I have been unsuccessful in finding non-erotic vampire fiction that has a lesbian relationship in it. It's all hetero. Some authors (like PC & Kristen Cast) include queer characters in their stories... but more or less, vampire fiction is all hetero. That being said, I really really appreciate Mead's lead characters of Rose and Lissa. Not only am I, now, madly in love with Rose (HOTT), but I'm able to queer the lead characters in a desperate attempt to have lesbians + vampires in a book. Go me! :)

In case you don't want to be spoiled with plot details... )

I'm so stoked to read "Frostbite" but my public library doesn't have it (trust me, I'm shocked too) AND the university library system doesn't have it! WTF? I don't know if I can wait until it miraculously shows up. I plan on purchasing all the books I enjoy anyhow (Night Huntress, House of Night, and Vamp Aacademy books, for example) so I will probably just buy Frostbite the next time I'm at the store. Yay for YA paperback books being like $10 :) Those of us who are poor college students appreciate that.
I can't wait until "Shadow Kiss" comes out! The name alone screams to me that I'll love it! :) :)

Animated Buffy

  • Aug. 8th, 2008 at 10:22 AM
Who loves Joss?
The only (or close to only) footage from Buffy: The Animated Series that was originally set for 2002. You can imagine my fangirl squees at even 3 minutes of new Buffy-related brilliance. I miss Joss shows so much :(

I've started "Betrayed," the second House of Night novel, and of course I'm loving it. I'll post a full thing after I finish it, but had to mention one part that made me smile
In case you really don't want to know anything about the book even though I wouldn't consider it a spoiler... )

Interests Meme

  • Aug. 4th, 2008 at 11:12 PM
Ash/Rach
I know I've been posting a lot - get over it haha You know you missed me for the two days I was "gone" this weekend.

I got this from [info]superbeffie... if anyone wants to participate, leave a comment and I'll pick 7 interests from your profile and list them and then you have to post in your journal why you like them, the history of the interest, etc and then you do the same and it becomes a cycle where we get to know more about each other! yay! :)

buffy scholarship: I'm a huge dork. HUGE. With that, I am a total die-hard Whedonist, so anything related to the great and mighty Joss Whedon I eat up and love forever. So imagine my surprise when, while writing my first Buffy essay for a class, I stumbled upon slayageonline.com - the Buffy online journal. With that and the mound of Buffy anthologies (Sex and the Slayer, Five Seasons of Buffy, Philosophy of Buffy, the Art of Buffy...) I became obsessed with Buffy Scholarship. I want nothing more than to take a Buffy class and I've written two essays about Buffy in my undergrad. I also have anthologies of other shows like "Angel" "Firefly" "Grey's Anatomy" and "The L Word" but Buffy is my favorite to study :)

the office: I initially had zero interest in the Office.. I really didn't like the British version and the US version didn't do much for me. I caught an interview with John Krasinski and I laughed so hard that I knew I had to give it another go. Now I'm in love with it. I think Pam and Jim are two of the great television characters and Dwight never ceases to make me laugh. My roommate fell in love with the show shortly after I do and now it is one of the staples in our apartment. We quote it all the time and you'd be shocked how easily quotes from The Office fit into every day conversation....

bif naked: Bif Naked is a singer who was featured in the Buffy Season 4 premier and her song "Lucky" quickly became one of my favorites. It's so hauntingly beautiful. And the rest of that album is just fun to belt out in the car *grin* My high school friend and I used to rock out to her CD on the bus on the way home and so listening to her, particularly "Lucky" makes me think of my friend and all the good Buffy times we had together. Plus she likes dogs. *grin*

mean girls: This is one of my FAVORITE movies. My bff and I quote this movie ALL THE TIME. It's one of our staples and we watch it way too often when we're together. I'm convinced we could quote the entire movie without the movie playing. Her boyfriend always just rolls his eyes - he's a good sport! haha The cast is awesome, the script is even better, and it's a good movie to watch when I'm having a horrible day.

dr horrible: Here's another example of my Joss love. I believe Dr Horrible is one of the most brilliant things to ever be produced. Seriously. The story behind the production of this 42 minute musical is really inspiring and makes me love Joss & Co even more. Plus I fell in love with NPH after hearing him sing. The songs are SOOOOO catchy and I've seen the musical a million times on hulu but I can't stop watching it! I can't wait to own the DVD (musical commentary!!) and the CD! :)

night huntress novels: By Jeaniene Frost, the Night Huntress novels are two books so far (the third coming out at the end of the year - yay!!) "Halfway to the Grave" and "One Foot in the Grave". I have reviews on my LJ :) I picked up these books because they take place in Ohio, which is where I live and Ohio is NEVER featured in books, let alone vampire books. So I was intrigued. I love love love vampire books and this series is one of the greatest. The mythology around this universe's creatures is fantastic and very creative and the characters? Cat is SOOOOOO hot and Bones is incredibly sexy - and the two of them together? *fans self* It is a romance book, which I didn't know until I finished "HTTG" and after saying I'd never be caught dead reading a romance book, I now eat my words. There is action, romance, sex, more action, more romance, and more sex. I've read each book three times.

imagine me & you: My research interest as an undergrad (and possibly when I go to grad school, although I'm not sure) is LGBT film. It's not the most uplifting topic as LGBT representation is quite pathetic and when the characters are queer, they more often than not are killed, die of natural causes, or are the villains then they die. It's really sad. "imagine me and you" is one of my favorite movies and in the top 5... maybe top 3 of my queer film list. It's a lesbian story that has a happy ending! Can you imagine!?!? :) Makes me all warm and fuzzy on the inside. Has a stellar cast, set in England, has an adorable script... it really proves that a good romance movie can be made with lesbians as the leading characters. If you haven't seen this movie, please do! :)

The House of Night

Check out my review for "Marked" the first House of Night novel. There are spoilers below, so don't click if you want to be surprised. Although it's not really plot stuff so much as just character and substance discussion haha

Zoey Redbird FTW! )

If you're looking for a fun young adult vampire story, check this one out! :)

pitter patter once again

EDIT: More pictures have been posted, but I'm not putting them in a separate entry... mostly b/c I've posted so much tonight haha So they're under the cut :) There are many more than what I've posted, but head over to ifelthope.net to see them all :)

another Ashley/Rachelle picture... )

*sigh* (ifelthope.net once again)

My lesbian heart goes pitter-patter

Alice/Jasper
I really hadn't planned on posting after my BD post b/c 1) I'm exhausted and 2) I really want people to see that first on my page and read and comment and discuss...

but over at ifelthope.net (love that site!) they posted Ashley Green and Rachelle Lefervre pictures from a photo shoot from H Magazine... and God bless that photographer. All the photos were gorgeous, but my lil lesbian heart immediately envisioned Alice/Victoria shipped after seeing these photos...

biggish photos.. under cut> <a href= )
WOW. Just... WOW. THIS makes my weekend of reading a less-than-stellar book bearable. Thank you, H Magazine.

Breaking Dawn... breaking hearts...

  • Aug. 3rd, 2008 at 10:27 PM
Alice/Jasper
So… I finished “Breaking Dawn” a little over 24 hours ago and I will attempt to articulate the way I feel about this book. I’ve posted on LJs and message boards all over the place so I’ll probably be copy/pasting so hopefully this makes sense. I’m expecting to leave things out b/c I’m just that cool and b/c my sleep cycle is all crazy b/c I was up until 5am reading after getting the book and now I’m exhausted. So here it goes. Please please please comment but don’t be hateful. These are my feelings and, trust me, I’m not alone in them. And this is long.. but I tried to pepper in sarcasm, humor, and some capitalized words so hopefully you find some amusement at least…

SPOILER ALERT!! SPOILER ALERT!! SPOILER ALERT!!

It felt like every nerve ending in my body was a live wire... )
